Planning for the heist the next day along with a visit to Charlotte’s gathering takes up most of the rest of the night. This time around, I spend my time hobnobbing and making contact with a bunch of newbies, including a few that are quite, quite eager to get stuck into things. One of them even makes me think he’s more suited for Quinn’s crowd than Charlotte’s and I make arrangements to let Quinn know.

Whenever the damn man makes it back in.

Once all that is settled, I actually log-out early and get some real rest. While running Eternal Night allows one to sort-of rest, it’s not the same as real sleep and it will catch up with you eventually. It’s why I have a semi-nocturnal schedule. If I didn’t have so many daytime commitments, I probably would go entirely nocturnal like so many of my compatriots.

Cleaning up when I wake up is fast, especially since the solar panels aren’t fixed yet. Breakfast on the other hand is not so easy, when I poke around my empty larder, realizing that the last frozen waffle I ate last night was everything that I had. I grab the cold ginger from last night’s sushi and chew on that as I wash the takeout box I’d brought with me and dried it out before dumping it in my backpack. After checking that I’ve got my reusable bags for shopping, I step out and head to the roof.

“Any luck?” I call out to Ondrej who looks up from the panels he’s got splayed out before him. He’s busy taking them apart along with a few other pieces of junk, swapping out parts and soldering in others. Or at least, that’s what I figure he’s doing. I’ve only got a passing understanding of what he’s up to, mostly from helping the handyman out when I’ve got nothing better to do.

“Always with the Novacore parts…” Ondrej spits to the side. I can only shrug before he continues. “Better if you get others. Theirs are still built to breakdown, no matter what they tell the government.”

I grunt in acknowledgement. I have a feeling Ondrej has a more optimistic view about the kind of parts the rest of the major corps put out, but I don’t tell him that. While I wouldn’t necessarily call Novacore a megacorp, it’s pretty damn close. Ditto the majority of other big companies and their affiliate reward companies.

“Whatever. I fix. Maybe last another six months,” Ondrej says. He snorts a little, clearing his throat and I frown a little worriedly.

“You okay?”

“Allergies.”

I stare at Ondrej and he waves a screwdriver at me.

“Is fine. Checkup was only a month ago and they found nothing.”

“Good.” I relax a little. Two years ago, he’d gotten nose cancer and the first signs of it had been a nose that hadn’t cleared for over a month. If Mrs. Trainor in 402 hadn’t badgered him into seeing a doctor, he probably wouldn’t have made it. “I’m headed to the store. Need
